Serena Mombasa One of the flag-ship hotels of this medium sized hotel chain, the Mombasa Serena, as with many of the Serena Hotels, combines local styling with international standards. Set on Shanzu Beach, a short distance from Mombasa, the location epitomises the definition of a city getaway.
Made up of 166 rooms, set amongst bougainvillea and traditional Arabic styled gardens, each has the facilities that you would expect from any large hotel such as air conditioning and en-suite. The decoration is vaguely based on an Arabic theme and all of the rooms have either a garden view or a view out to the Ocean beyond. The communal areas of the hotel are made up by a variety of recreational activities such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts, beach volley ball and a good bar. It is also possible to go out to the reef that runs just off-shore to dive and snorkel, or to try and hook one of the large sail fish that glide in the deep blue.

For my money, as much as I like the Serenas in the Mara and the Serengeti, they have yet to produce a really intimate beach hotel. While it has everything that a family may want in the way of facilities, and provides good levels of service, I am not a massive fan of sharing the beach with too many others. In conclusion, good for families, although Hemmingways may be a better choice, and for couples not really a starter.
