Mauritius; Expert guide to Mauritius; Hotels on the North Coast

Anyone who enjoys local nightlife; remote hideaways nonetheless, but with access to a more buzzy atmosphere of the Mauritian coast should consider the northern beaches around the Grand Baie area.

Grand Baie is the largest holiday resort in Mauritius and boasts a beautiful beach with emerald green water. This former fishing village is now a vibrant centre for designer clothes shops, restaurants, craft shops and great nightclubs.

It is also the jumping-off point for visits to the islands off the north coast – Coin de Mire, Ile Plate and Ilot Gabriel.

"Pamplemousses" located in the north of the island is famous throughout the world for its superb botanical gardens. Started in the early years of the French reign, this remarkable collection includes hundred-year old trees; the tallipot palm that grows for 40 years, flowers then dies; incredible giant water lilies and amazing spice trees.
