Mauritius; Expert guide to Mauritius; Hotels on the West Coast
The beaches on the west coast of Mauritius are justifiably famous for their beauty, and the popular beaches at Flic en Flac and Le Morne provide excellent windsurfing, waterskiiing, diving and snorkelling. Its proximaty to Port Louis makes Flic en Flac a popular favourite with Mauritians, and it can get crowded at weekends and holidays. Port Louis is the island's capital and largest city. The multicultural nature of the island is much in evidence, especially in the exotic covered market, which sells everything from saris to natural remedies. The busy streets shelter mosques, Hindu temples, Chinese pagodas and Christian churches and shrines. The area of Le Morne is much more isolated and has been developed as an upmarket tourist spot. Inland, the western aspect of the island is extends to wild mountains and what remains of Mauritius’s indigenous forests.
