Tanzania and Zanzibar; an Expert guide to the other island lodges


Zanzibar is obviously the most famous of Tanzania's Indian Ocean Islands; additionally Tanzania has two other significant islands as well as a number of small island lodges.

Mafia and Pemba islands (south and north of Zanzibar respectively) are large islands with only a handful of lodges on them. Predominately they are dive locations - including access to very deep water channels, and reasonable beaches, though the beaches are less beautiful than those on Zanzibar.

Off Zanzibar there are 2 significant island lodges – Mnemba Island which is unbelievable though also unbelievably expensive, and Chumbe Island Lodge which is an amazing eco-project. Finally on the mainland (so not strictly speaking an island) Ras Kutani is one of our all time favorite lodges – just 12 rooms in an amazingly beautiful and tranquil stretch of perfect coastline.

Mnemba Island Lodge

Chumbe Island Coral Park

It is just off Zanzibar itself is the first marine sanctuary in Zanzibar and a colourful little island surrounded by a shallow reef alive with 90% of all coral species ever recorded in East Africa, estimated around two hundred species. The fronds and shadows of this wide coral garden are home to over 350 species of fish, sea turtles and lobster, and the small coral rag island rises up at the centre with a host of other living creatures in its protective embrace.
